  18. <p>     Since the 1988 closing of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis,
  19. where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, there have been
  20. two constants at the scene: a steady stream of sightseers
  21. looking at the unofficial shrine, and the motel's last manager,
  22. Jacqueline Smith, who stubbornly refuses to say goodbye to the
  23. facility. Night and day, through storm and sunshine, Smith, 39,
  24. has camped out in a pup tent in front of the fenced-in
  25. property, courteously greeting tourists and adamantly opposing
  26. plans to renovate the Lorraine and construct a $9 million
  27. Lorraine Civil Rights Museum. She thinks the place should be
  28. used to house the homeless in tribute to King.

  30. <p>     Smith was still there last week, forcing crews to work
  31. around her as they began gutting the motel. With city and state
  32. officials wary of being drawn into the fray, the construction
  33. company, facing possible delay penalties, reluctantly
  34. petitioned a chancery court judge to order Smith's removal. The
  35. court directed Smith to vacate the property or face arrest.
  36. Sheriff's deputies are expected to try to enforce the court
  37. order this week.
